One “lie” vs. 6,121 hate crimes

Actor Jussie Smollett is in trouble.

He said two men attacked him for being black and gay (he’s also Jewish but that didn’t motivate the hate crime). He escaped the attack with a noose around his neck. He told police that his attackers supported Trump. Later police arrested two men but soon released them. “Sources” (please note the quotation marks) now say Smollett paid the men to do it.

I’m content to sit back on and wait on this one.

But a lot of people are not as patient. Before any of the latest developments, conservatives and conspiracy theorists shouted hoax. They were angry because Smollett fingered Trump supporters. The latest news makes them giddy because now they can say, “See, we told you. Liberals make this shit up about us.”

Conservatives should be upset if Smollett lied. But here’s something they should gobble while they gloat.

In 2016, there were 6,121 instances of hate crime in the United States

The No. 1 target of hate crime: African Americans.

One potentially made-up story doesn’t negate that number.
