Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Your name is Pierre. You must be French. Or maybe Quebecois or Haitian?

I’ve heard this question a lot. My parents came from the Caribbean but not from one of the French-speaking islands. Ruth and Winston emigrated from Jamaica to Canada in the seventies. The Prime Minister was Pierre Elliot Trudeau. I think they felt they owed something to the man whose policy decisions gave them a shot at a better life — if not the good life. So they altered their plan and and named me Pierre instead Peter.
