A recipe for recommendations

I can’t part with the Winter 2013 issues of Lapham’s Quarterly.

I bought it in New York and after a recommendation from a stranger. My wife and I had dinner plans but we were early. We found a dive bar and it was happy hour. We sat at the bar and ordered a drink. I plopped Teju Cole’s Open City down and took a sip of my drink.

Then I heard a murmur from beside me. A man at the end of the bar noticed my book. He figured I needed to read the Intoxication issue of Lapham’s Quarter and he was right.

But I had to be open to accepting the recommendation.

And he had to be willing to share.

That’s a great recipe for discovering new things.
